I am surprised that this has missed the attention of Virtuarch, especially with his obsession with Point clouds, but 2 days ago Autodesk silently slipped a technology preview onto the Autodesk labs site called Project PhotoFly
Project Photofly is a technology preview of automatically converting photographs shot around an object or a scene into "Photo Scenes" using the power of cloud computing. The photographs can be shot with any standard digital camera, as long as you follow some shooting guidelines.
You can then upload your pictures up to the photofly server, which then automatically calibrates the images, (which basically uses some algorithms to automatically find common points in the photographs), once enough of these points are found it then has enough information to start creating 3D special data of the scene, in this case a “point cloud”.
Once the fotofly server has finished it sends you an email, you can login and view the 3D model and even download it as either a DWG or RZI file (Autodesk Image modeller). This can then be put into whichever 3D design application you are using.

After playing with the rather 'clunky' Autodesk Image modeller and pulling my hair out trying to get anything more than a basic cube, this Technology preview is looking very impressive indeed. Look out for a full hands on Review on my Parametric Pervert blog in the next few weeks.
