Creating and amending keynote files from NBS Specification Writer

In the latest release of NBS specification writer, the export function has been revamped to include an 'export Autodesk Revit keynote' file.  It is a simple process to update your current project keynote file to the latest version of your project specification, but there are a few considerations to note.  See the following workflow, and refer to the considerations at the bottom of this tutorial before proceeding.

Fiirst you need to export your NBS spec into the correct format.

1.  In the NBS software, select the export wizard and click "next" when you are happy with the contents

2.  Click on the button to export the file to Revit in a compatable format:

3.  In Revit you will need to then replace the standard keynote file with your new project specific file.  Rename this file with the job number and place in the RVT folder (_space employees also refer to the standards).  Then using the Annotate ribbon, select the tags pulldown and 'keynoting settings'

4.  From the next dialogue, navigate to your new keynote file and select this in the box, taking care to select a relative path type.  OK this and your project keynote file will be updated.

That's it, simple as that!

Considerations:

  1. Any existing keynotes with the same references will be replaced with the new titles, for example
"F10/110 Clay Facing Brick" will now become "F10/110 CLAY FACING BRICK TO SPORTS HALL"
  2. The text file from NBS is in CAPS format, not sentence.
  3. Any clauses referenced that are not in your new spec (Section E is a common issue in architectural specifications, as we don't tend to write those) will be replaced with the ubiquitous Revit ??? Question marks.  Personally I think this is a good aide memoire for checking that your keynoting is set up to reference only your spec items, but this may cause issues if you are in a rush.
  4. You will probably need to go through and edit your materials to reference these new keynotes.  Make sure in file updates and any transferred project standards that you do not replace and hence lose all of your edits.  Pay particular attention when implementing corporate standard updates!
